Where History Lives Beneath the California Sun
Nestled in the hills of Carlsbad, California, Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park is a beautifully preserved 27-acre cultural landmark. Once the personal retreat of actor, preservationist, and conservationist Leo Carrillo, the ranch now serves as a living tribute to California’s Spanish and early Hollywood heritage.

A Storied Past
Leo Carrillo, best known for his role as Pancho in The Cisco Kid, purchased this land in the 1930s and named it Rancho de los Kiotes. He envisioned a quiet escape that honored his family’s deep roots in California—his ancestors were among the original Spanish settlers. Carrillo designed the ranch in a traditional Spanish Revival style, incorporating adobe buildings, red tile roofs, wooden beams, and archways that reflect the architecture of early California missions.
A Hidden Gem in Carlsbad
Today, the ranch is a public park and cultural landmark, open to visitors year-round. As you explore the grounds, you’ll find:
- Restored adobe buildings, including Carrillo’s original hacienda-style home
- A barn, tack house, cantina, and carriage house, all reflecting the working-ranch lifestyle
- Dozens of free-roaming peacocks, whose calls and colors bring the landscape to life
- Serene walking paths lined with agave, succulents, pepper trees, and native plants
- Interpretive signs and exhibits that share stories of California history and ranch life
Preserving the Legacy
